The encuentros | encounters Project is a program designed to allow participants to explore language and how humans communicate when there are barriers to spoken language. Two different groups of students from two selected sites will investigate and explore the strategies used to bridge communication gaps, and to learn how those strategies are effective in their own lives. Working from the students' experience at school, home, and in their communities, encuentros | encounters will introduce them with the concepts of language, communication, electronic communication, and body language, while developing new concepts and skills to open up avenues of conversation. Music, dance, drama, creative writing, and digital technologies will be integrated into the course of study. The final week will culminate in a Summit for the participants to share their work face-to-face, and continue the dialogue sparked by the previous weeks' work; to share their discovered strategies of breaking down barriers and communicating in the real world through art.
